DISCLAIMER: Again, Doctor/Martha isn't a thing.
Summary: Not the most cringiest, but not great. Mostly archiving here. This is basically the summary of a not-written episode with some dialogue. I like the title and some of the imagery.
The Doctor and Martha arrive in an old part of the countryside. As soon as he steps outside, he gets a big whiff of burning *something* and a slight vision of the countryside, just...burning. He shrugs it off, however, and they go to investigate where they are. When they try to enter a house, they're met with people who almost attack them. It turns out that they've been attacked by some strange humanoids-no facial features, but loads and loads of weird tattoos. Martha has a look at the wounded, while the Doctor asks the woman in charge whether anything...anything else strange...happened lately. She answers, "as a matter of fact..." and tells him that there's a boy who's been acting strange. He's a bit out of it and seems to be seeing things they can't. Even more than anything else, though, is how he's been having so many nightmares. He guesses that he can help, and asks the boy's name. "Daniel," he's told, "Daniel Latimer. He's not from around here, that's just what he told us." The Doctor's eyes flash at this one, but he doesn't give too much away.
He goes upstairs. At least it's not him in the bed, but he can't rule out the possibility that he's regenerated. And he doesn't think it likely that there's a relative of Timothy's here and in this time period...
As he's examining the unconscious Daniel, suddenly his eyes flick open and he grabs the Doctor's collar, begging him to go. "If you stay, you will regenerate and your companion will die." He stumbles backwards in shock, just as Martha enters the room. She rushes forward to catch him, as his clumsy stumble threatens to bring him onto the floor.
Worried, from Martha's supporting arms, he asks, "Who are you? Where are you from?"
The other can't quite recall, but mutters in answer, "A place long ago and far away, not that I remember its name, but its memory lives on..." The Doctor turns even more pale and rushes out.
When Martha catches up, he begs her to go back to the TARDIS. Even when she's told her life's in danger, she refuses. "My place is here," she insists. He's almost devastated already, just by the thought of it. He just says that they'll both go back to the TARDIS together, for the night. And they'll watch a movie together, and fall asleep on the sofa.
The next morning, he's awake and has a lot of energy, but isn't quite his cheerful self. He returns to Daniel and does the mind-link thing. He's given another vision of the burning fires. Like the ones that destroyed Gallifrey, these are destroying his life. These fires are in the past, but not quite, metaphorically, eternally there. This other Daniel is a regenerated Doctor, memory half gone with the pain of losing Martha. The Doctor thanks him for his help, guessing that he wasn't here the last time. The other isn't sure of this, but the Doctor thinks he has some ideas for preventing what seems inevitable. Like giving Martha the sonic. They have to split up, though. He gets some sense of what is to come, and will try to fight it on his own terms.
He manages to avoid both. The Regenerated Doctor should disappear, but doesn't. He's a bit like the Next Doctor, only a little less pompous. He gets one last kiss from Martha and heads off, an anachronism in an anomaly. One gets the feeling that he likes this very much.
