Summary: Not the most cringiest, but not great.  Mostly archiving here.  Martha's part of a thief group.  Possibly also so is the Doctor?  Not sure if anyone's an alien.

Chapter 1: Wherein a Thief Steals a Heart

 

Martha saw him and felt her heart jump.  'Not now...' she thought in despair.  The timing was all wrong, for one thing.

"Moni, instructions," she heard a woman's voice, soft and panicked, in her ear.

"Keep working," she hissed back under her breath.  "Mask is coming to give you a little more time, just hold on 'till he can get there.  Is the door locked?"

"Oh.  No.  No, it isn't."  She heard the other woman's tone shift from senseless worry to a more controlled, professional tone.  She could still hear concern, but at least she was fairly sure Alise would do her job.

She hit the earpiece again and muttered, "Tell me you're on your way, Mask."

"My sense of timing is impeccable," he answered, offended.  She could hear his voice murmuring in the background, along with that of other women.  She rolled her eyes and spoke again.  "Alise needs your help.  Desperately."

His attention was caught.  "Anything for a lady."

She sighed with relief and went over to the table to grab a glass of champagne when she heard a voice behind her that almost made her spill her drink.  She turned to see the man she'd spotted earlier and felt the floor shift out from under her.

He was beautiful, absolutely gorgeous.  He was wearing glasses that perfectly matched his face, covering bright, enthusiastic brown eyes.  His hair was brown, too, and spiky.  She could see why, as he ran his fingers through his hair, looking toward the stage.  He had long sideburns...and he was really, really skinny.  Like many here, he was wearing formal wear, unusually a tux, which was tightly fitted.  She found herself blushing.
